Before you can apply for a driving test you must pass a theory test. This however does not mean you cannot start to learn to drive. The theory test is in two parts, Part One is the multiple-choice: 50 questions of which you must get at least 43 correct. Part Two is the hazard perception test: You'll be shown 14 short video clips, there are 15 developing hazards that you will identify and respond to by clicking on the mouse of the computer. The quicker your response time, the higher your score. The pass mark is 44 out of a possible 75.

You will be given the result immediatly after the test, you must pass both parts of the test at the same time. When you pass you will be given a pass certificate, which allows you to book your Practical Test.

The driving test is straightforward. It is designed to see if you can drive safely, know the Highway Code and can demonstrate this through your driving. Test routes are designed to be as uniform as possible and include a range of typical road and traffic conditions. You will be given directions by the Driving Examiner in good time and asked to carry out set exercises; these will be two reverse manoeuvres, of the four below:

Before you start your driving test the examiner will ask you two safety checks questions about the vehicle. If you fail to get one of the questions correct you could be given a minor fault. You are allowed a maximum of 15 minor/driver faults during the practical driving test but if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will not be successful. At the end of the driving test the driving examiner will inform you whether you have passed or failed.
